At the beginning of each semester every College of Marin student pays a $12 health fee. Do you ever wonder what that money provides for you?
By paying the health fee each student is covered for a variety of basic health care needs. June Lee, head nurse at the Kentfield campus health center, explained the different services the health center offers: first aid, short term illness, screening tests as well as medications and immunizations.
First aid services consist of care for accidental injuries. Students with short-term illnesses can receive care for specific illnesses as well as health counseling. Certain screening tests are available such as tuberculin test, pregnancy, blood pressure, weight, cholesterol, HIV and various other blood tests. Immunizations include flu shot, tetanus, measles, rubella and mums shot. There is also a physician who comes to the health center every Thursday for three hours and is available by appointment only.
Patients in need of services beyond what the health center offers are all referred to other programs. The health center does not provide gynecological or STD services because other clinics such as, Planed Parenthood or FAMPAK offers more cost effective services.
The budget for the health center has been a little over $100,000 per year. But lately COM is having trouble keeping this money up because their funding is enrollment driven. Each time a student's health fee is waivered, the health center looses that $12. This $12 loss can add up drastically for the center. With an 8% decline in enrollment this year and a percentage of students on aid this year.
It is important to be informed about what you are paying for and have access to the services you paid for. If you need more information stop by the health center located in Dickson Hall 118 to speak with one of the nurses or call (415) 485-9458.
