Spring styles for 2004

While it's getting colder and colder outside, it
is nice to think that spring styles are in the works
and on their way to stores. Soon, after the blitz of
pre-Christmas shopping and it's aftermath of
slashed prices and double discount sales, the spring
styles will appear in your local mall at full price,
and ready to be bought.

As fall was creeping up around New York City, fashionistas gathered at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, a series of shows highlighting the styles that will be worn this spring. Each designer seemed to be doing his or her own thing, giving the wearer many new options.

The colors for spring are juicy and bright. Many pieces were infused with yellow, orange, blue and lime green. Classic white and black ensembles were also popular. The fabrics used for the most part were gossamer, delicate and feminine.

The designers showed a mix of sporty and girly looks. They banished the fall mod trend and replaced it with good, old-fashioned lady-like charm complete with Old World details such delicate draping, ruffles, hand-stitched embroidery. Other stand out details include
the perpetually popular pleated skirt, bows, and lace.
Designers showed ultra-feminine billowy, chiffon skirts and dresses.
The only remnant of fall which seems to be sticking
around is the mini.

This season it is, like everything else, infused with sorbet-shaded color. Tommy Hilfinger used one yellow in his collection and funky Marc
Jacobs used a yummy-melon pink.

According to the Pantone Color Institute, a leader of
color trends in the industry, the colors that
will be in for spring include rich oranges, coral
pinks, cayanne reds, cool pinks, light taupes, army
greens, lavenders and true and navy blues. The most
prominent in many of the designers' collections is all shades of pink. Ralph Lauren was one designer to use a vast amount of
color in his usually very sporty-traditional looks. In the first part of the show, Lauren stayed very true to himself, showing off black and white varsity-inspired pieces using such traditional fabrics as cotton. Some of the stand out pieces included a cable knit dress, black and white stripes and pleated mini skirts and a sequined varsity style cardigan. In the second part of his show, he began to have fun with color.
