Self-Defense Comes to COM

Do you feel scared walking to your car at night? This guy might be able to help.
Hursey Baker, College of Marin’s new Karate instructor, offers a class in Wado Ki Kai, a traditional martial art, to people interested in learning basic self-defense.
Mr. Baker has been studying Wado Ki Kai, which translates as ‘Learn from all things,’ for 16 years, and has been teaching for nine. He currently holds a 3rd degree Black Belt in Wado Ki Kai. He also is a member of the American Teacher’s Association of Martial Arts.
This traditioinal Karate style of was founded by Japanese Karate Master Gichin Fun Koshi, and traces its roots to the island of Okinawa. This particular style adopts kicks from Tai Kwan Do and Shotokan, grappling techniques from Jujitsu, and sweeps and rolls from the Judo style.
Wado Ki Kai is a way of life, says Mr. Baker. “Unlike many other sports, this art form enables one to flow and build a strong sense of character.” When one accepts this way of life, he says, one can become aware of the body that houses our soul.
Among the principles of Wado Ki Kai are being able to avoid danger, protecting loved ones, and respecting all living things.
I asked Mr. Baker what the requirements are for attempting such a diverse style of martial arts. “A will to get your body in shape, a desire to learn a traditional martial art and to heighten your thinking and to develop a greater outlook on the world.
