Well the school year is winding down, time to work a little, play a little anything but live the college student’s life. What have we learned? Anything? Nothing? Well let’s review what budget conscious decisions we can make.
For food we discussed the last bastion of the budget gourmet: the lunch buffet. Where for a few bucks (between five dollars and seven dollars) you can eat a multi-course meal replete with fresh veggies, flavorful meats (or not), soups and/or salads. We covered my two favorites: Paradise Vietnamese Restaurant at 1444 fourth street in San Rafael and India Village at 555 Francisco Blvd. also in San Rafael. One other that needs to be included is Fresh Choice at the Town Center in Corte Madera. It is in the same fiscal ballpark but has more urbane fare, none of the spicy specialties of the two ethnic ones.
We also covered cheap music, a la Napster (R.I.P.). We learned that you could download digital music (MP3’s) for free and convert them to the WAV. Format and make CDs. Now that Napster has all but gone by the wayside you can cry your tears of abandonment on the shoulder of Aimster.com a new music sharing site that has all the features you liked at Napster (like free music) but none of the legal hassles yet. Granted a CD burner is an investment, about $200, it can save you thousands on CDs.
We also explored how to avoid the high cost of health clubs and yoga studios by utilizing our very own campus to buff and tone our pizza laden bodies. By enrolling in PE classes at COM we can have access to a fully stocked weight room courtesy of PE 169. Additionally we can stretch our bodies and consciousness during Yoga in PE 173 with Alice Rocky. Both classes are also offered in the summer, so no excuses.
Finally we looked into the Marin Express Book, which gave us discounts on everything from dry-cleaning to auto repair. Of all the options we explored this seems to be the most far reaching. For the thirty bucks it gives the most far-reaching discounts. It makes a great gift because it really does “keep on giving” as the saying goes.
Hopefully some of you found at least one of these options informative. I enjoyed investigating them immensely. Best of luck to you all and I’ll see some of you at SF State next semester.
